Radiology Gastric Tube removal routine post procedure discharge instructions

 

Diet:

  • Resume your routine diet

Activity:

  • Activity as tolerated
  • You may shower
  • If you have received sedation, rest for the rest of the day, do not drive or make legal decisions for 24 hrs

Wound/incisional/ Device Care:

  • Avoid touching your incision site
  • Keep the incision clean and dry. You may remove the dressing to shower
  • Reapply dressing or change bandaid as needed, until site is healed

Pain management:

  • You may take Tylenol or acetaminophen for pain

Medication Changes:

  • Take all your medications as ordered by your doctor, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Patients on blood thinners may restart them after 24 hours unless otherwise indicated.

Post Procedure signs/symptom to be expected:

  • Mild discomfort at site
  • Little or no drainage from dressing for a day or two

Post procedure signs/symptoms that require notification of your physician

Call your physician if any of the following occurs (if you are unable to get hold of your physician Contact the Medical Society):

  • You have pain unrelieved by acetaminophen or other over counter medication
  • If you have a temperature over 101 or you have redness, swelling or pus from the tube removal site
  • If the drainage does not stop or increases after several days
  • You have any questions or concerns.
  • You have any new or unusual symptoms.

Post procedure signs and symptoms that require immediate attention. Proceed to your nearest Emergency Department/or call 911 for following:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding (bleeding occurs that cannot be stopped with pressure to site)

Date and time to see next see your physician:

  • Call the physician who ordered your procedure for a follow up appointment, if you do not already have a scheduled follow up appointment date and time.
