NECK BIOPSY

 

 

     You are receiving this information on Neck Biopsy as part of your discharge instructions. A neck biopsy is done to remove tissue to check for abnormal cells. We will examine that tissue and your doctor will give you the results.

 

 

BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE YOU CAN EXPECT THE FOLLOWING:

 

  • To sign a consent form.
  • To get undressed for the procedure and wear a gown.
  • The nurse will check your blood pressure, pulse and temperature. He or she will also talk with you.
  • An IV will be started in your arm or hand.

 

 

HOW ISTHE PROCEDURE DONE?

 

  • You will be taken to Ultrasound, and positioned with your head back slightly so that your neck is extended.
  • You will be scanned upon arrival to assist the radiologist to pinpoint where to place the biopsy needle.
  • Your skin will be cleansed with an antiseptic soap, and then numbed with a local anesthetic.
  • You may receive some medications to relax you and decrease your pain if indicated.
  • The radiologist will place the needle into the neck area while observing the ultrasound image to direct the needle.
  • Several scans and repositioning of the needle are needed to obtain adequate specimens.
  • The pathologist may come to the Ultrasound area and look at the tissue under a microscope to determine if the specimen is adequate for testing.
  • This procedure takes approximately 60 minutes.

 

 

RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROCEDURE:

 

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Pain

 

 

POST PROCEDURE DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS

 

DIET

 

  • You may resume your regular diet.

 

 

ACTIVITY

 

  • Increase your activity as tolerated.
  • Do not do any heavy lifting for 24 hours (anything over 10 pounds)
  • Have someone else drive you home. (If you are sedated)
  • You may drive in 24 hours (If you are sedated)

 

 

WOUND/INCISONSAL DEVICE CARE

 

  • Place an ice pack on the biopsy site for 15 minutes at a time, every hour for 6-8 hours after the biopsy, then as needed.
  • Keep your bandage clean and dry, you may remove your bandage in 24 hrs.
  • You may shower the following day.

 

 

PAIN MANAGEMENT

 

  • You may use over the counter medications such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain unless otherwise contraindicated. Discuss any other over the counter use of aspirin and Ibuprofen products with your doctor before using them.

 

 

MEDICATION CHANGES

 

  • Take all your medications as ordered by your doctor, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Patients on blood thinners may restart their medications after 24 hours.

 

 

POST PROCEDURE SIGNS/YMPTOMS TO BE EXPECTED

 

  • Tenderness at the site for up to 2-4 days.
  • Bruising at the site.

 

 

POST PROCEDURE SIGNS/SYMPTOMS THAT REQUIRE NOTIFICATION OF YOUR PHYSICAIAN

 

  • You have severe pain not relieved by pain medication.
  • Drainage from the needle-insertion area.
  • Temperature over 101 degrees
  • Redness, swelling, or warmth around the biopsy site.
  • Drainage or pus from the biopsy site
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • You have any questions or concerns.
  • You have any new or unusual symptoms.

 

 

POST PROCEDURE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT REQUIRE IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. PROCEED TO YOUR NEAREST EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT OR CALL 911 FOR THE FOLLOWING:

 

  • Uncontrolled bleeding; if this should begin after you return home, you should lie down. Apply pressure to the site where the catheter was and have someone call your doctor right away. If you are unable to get a hold of your doctor quickly or you cannot stop the bleeding with your pressure, call 911.
  • Severe shortness of breath, difficulty breathing or chest pain

 

 

DATE AND TIME TO SEE YOUR PHYSICIAN

 

  • Call the physician who ordered your procedure for a follow up appointment, if you do not already have a scheduled appointment. Your physician should have test results within 3-5 days.
